How to Repair a Boat Using Fiberglass Patches

Some people find it fascinating to use boats for their everyday usage with different functions or purposes like boats can be used for fishing, for traveling, for cruising, for transportation, for business purposes and other related activities and since it is very useful for people, they would like to invest on a boat that will last long that is why they also invest on materials that would make it durable and reliable as years pass. Fiberglass is a material use with the help of epoxy resin to patch or to repair holes on boats since fiberglass makes the boat easy to repair and it makes the boat’s like last long.

The boat must be prepared before you cover it with fiberglass because it is necessary for you to remove other parts like the reels, keels and strakes which are parts that are not necessary to be covered with fiberglass. To start with, you must measure and find the holes on your boat to fill it with an appropriate filler then wash and apply a dewaxing solvent and fiberglass patch after grinding the area with a disk sander.

After searching for the holes on your boat and repairing it with fiberglass patches, you thoroughly clean the hull of your boat so that all the debris, dirt, molds and barnacles will be remove before the application of the fiberglass. The surface of the boat must be a little bit rough to achieve or to have best results that is why you must use a disk sander to sand the surface of the boat but not too much because too much sanding can cause rippling on the boat.

For the next step, you must mix resin and a hardener so that you can pour it into a paint and stir it then after thirty minutes you can apply it on the hull of the boat upon its application on the boat. By using a foam roller and with application of firm pressure and directional strokes, you may now paint the hull of the boat until you cover the whole surface and you must wait for the whole surface to dry before you can apply additional works on the hull of the boat.

Before the application of the second coating of the resin, you must first cut the fiberglass cloth into your desired shape then you must apply it on the surface through the use of tapes, staples and tacks then apply now the resin coating for the second time. The surface or hull of the boat must be applied with the fill and final coating after which when it becomes hard, you must use a disk sander again to make it smooth and clean then apply a protective agent on it.
